What is overweight

You become overweight if, for a period of time, you consume more calories than your body burns, which it then stores as fat. This does not mean that all overweight people eat without restraint.

Overweight usually comes slowly over a period of years, due to a quite small imbalance in the relationship between intake and burning of calories. The propensity to have a calorie imbalance is largely hereditary – or, in other words, genetically determined. This leads to overweight when you live in a society like ours, where the common foods do not provide a feeling of fullness and the need for physical activity in daily life is minimal.

You cannot always do something to change a propensity for being overweight. But you can always do something about it.

Body Mass Index – BMI

International obesity research mainly uses the so-called BMI for assessing overweight. BMI is calculated by using the following formula:

A BMI between 18.5 and 25 is considered the healthiest. A BMI between 25 and 30 is considered moderately overweight, and a BMI over 30 is considered obese. The BMI values apply for all adults and provide an indication of the degree of obesity. But BMI does not typically indicate anything about how much of the weight is fat and how much is muscle. Since muscle weighs more than fat, a person with a large muscle mass will have a relatively high BMI without being overweight. This is especially seen in men who work out a lot.

Waist measurement

A relatively simple way to measure whether you are overweight is your waist measurement. Waist measurement is a better method than both weight and BMI. Apart from those who are pregnant, a high waist measurement is not due to high muscle mass, but is rather a direct measure of the amount of fat in the body. The disadvantage of this method, however, is that some people tend to deposit fat other places than around the waist.

Because of the many individual differences, you should not focus too heavily on these different measurements. It is important to listen to your common sense and look honestly at your naked body in the mirror once in a while.
