Weight loss & BMI
What is considered as overweight?
Overweight occurs with a positive energy balance – this means that your energy intake is higher than your energy used over a longer period. When you eat more calories than your body uses, the extra energy from the calories will be transformed into fat, which is stored in the body. It is fairly easy to maintain a positive energy balance in our society, as the increasing access to high-energy food, together with an increase in stationary lifestyles (e.g. desk jobs), and a lack of physical activity on a daily basis. Many people are used to eat a little too much every day, and the extra kilos are often a result that is slowly showing.
There is an increasing amount of overweight and obese people in Denmark. The latest studies from the Health Department shows that 51% of the Danish population is overweight – 17% of these can be considered as obese. Overweight increases the risk of lifestyle diseases – such as cardiovascular dieases, type-2 diabetes and certain forms of cancer. Lifestyle diseases weakens the health and medication can be needed. Untreated obesity can result in shorten lifespan and a decrease in life quality.
BMI – Body Mass Index
There are multiple ways to asses if a person can be considered overweight or obese. International obesity research generally uses the Body Mass Index (BMI) to estimate if a person is overweight or in a normal range of body mass. BMI is easily calculated by using your weight in kilos and height in meters.
BMI = weight in kilo / (height in meter x height in meter)
A BMI between 18.5 and 25 is considered normal and to be the healthiest. If your BMI is between 25 and 30 you are considered overweight. A BMI above 30 is considered obese. The BMI intervals apply to all grownups and indicate the degree of overweight. BMI does not evaluate the ratio between muscles and fat. Because muscle mass has a higher density than fat, a person with a high muscle mass will also have a high BMI but is not considered overweight. For example, a male that works out a lot might have a high BMI, but might not be overweight.
It is relatively easy to evaluate if a person is overweight by measuring their waist circumference – and is often far better method than using the BMI index. A high waist circumference, when not pregnant, is probably not because of a high amount of muscle mass but instead an indication of the amount of body fat. A BMI over 25 and a waist circumference over 88 for women and over 102 for men increases the risk of developing lifestyle diseases. Some people have a tendency to store fat in other places than around the waist area. There are several individual differences that indicate using one method may not work as well as another. It is important to maintain a healthy way of looking at your body and to be honest toward yourself when looking at your naked body in the mirror.
|Women (cm)||Men (cm)||Risk of complications|
|< 80||< 94||Low risk|
|> 88||> 102||High risk|
How to lose weight
You can use different strategies to lose weight. Common to all the strategies is that you need to intake less calories than you burn. Some strategies are more efficient than others, and not all strategies are healthy. You need to be precautious before you start a new kind of diet. One thing is for sure: you cannot eat anything you want and still lose weight by using a pendulum or taking pills or food supplements alone.
To lose weight, and maintain the weight loss, you need a focused and conscious effort. No matter which strategy you chose to lose weight, it is a good idea to get support and help from other people. To maintain a permanent weight loss, you need to change some of your habits. It can be difficult if you do not have the support from your surroundings or if you do not have anyone you can talk to, about the thoughts and challenges that come with the process of weight loss.
Diet – one way or another
It is essential to choose a strategy that fits you and your daily life. It is also important that you choose a healthy strategy. Two of the most acknowledged and tested diets are regular diet, with a balanced, energy restricted diet, and Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) such as Nupo Diet. The Nupo diet replaces your diet and are designed to provide you with all the essential nutrients that your body needs, as well as guarantee a safe, fast, and efficient weight loss.
